Yes...but also, no!
Every Farmer's Market Saturday we've been threatened with rain. Our first market was the only rain we dealt with, but it was nothing like yesterday, Saturday June 24th. Every Farmer's Market Saturday we've checked the radar the morning of and Mother Nature cleared perfectly for things to run as planned from 8am-12pm. The opposite happened yesterday. Every time we checked the radar it got worse. Then I'd post an update on our Facebook and event page only for the weather to immediately turn even worse.
Heads up before we continue! The photo quality may not be the greatest this week. I left my professional camera in the car to stay dry and used my cell phone to take photos.
We hated to make the call to cancel the market because the goodies were already baked and flowers and produce were already picked. That's right PRODUCE! We were able to get a produce vendor in. More on that later.
From our initial radar reading the first wave of storms would go North of us and the next wave would happen at 10am. Yeah...8:30 we were hit by the storm and it kept hitting for what seemed like forever. Literally, at one point hit with small hail. Angela's Petals & Blooms had set up but quickly tore everything down, which was the smart call.
Sammi, my husband (Jared), and I (Kelsey) kind of gathered everything up from the Three Rivers Kringla and Humboldt Farmer's Market tables then tried to huddle down under the canopy. When the lightning came in I decided to get out of there and stand under the awning by the businesses East of the plaza. It was raining so hard the street was starting to look like a river. Shortly after I got out of there Sammi and Jared felt like they missed the ark before the flood.
We hated to postpone our Touch a Truck event and kids activities, but we didn't want to put any kids in danger if the storms kept coming as strong as they were. Story time and kids craft was supposed to start at 9:30 and all the trucks were supposed to be there by 10. Lightning did continue longer than the radar anticipated. The Touch a Truck stuff could've still gone as planned but it was too dicey for too long for us to safely hold the event. Better safe than sorry when it comes to kids activities. It cleared up enough for people to come shop (and stay dry) around 10am.
Touch a Truck will be rescheduled to a later date!
The (possibly crazy) vendors who braved the storm were:
Julie w/ Garden Thyme
Sammi & Kelsey (me) w/ Three Rivers Kringla
Kenny Steele brought some awesome fresh picked produce!
joco flowers set up about 10am! The bright flower arrangements were what we all needed after the gray, soggy morning we'd had.
It's still mind blowing how we went from this:
To this:
Despite the rain the vendors who were there did awesome! The produce sold out. I think Julie sold all of her eggs and the rest of us were nearly sold out. It's mind blowing to me the support our vendors have been getting. We love seeing the community show up for us no matter what Mother Nature throws at us!
Huge THANKS to Louise w/ Humboldt Mercantile for being there and helping us dry off and take cover in front of her storefront!
Did you know the Humboldt Farmer's Market has a table set up every market day? Yesterday, we had lemonade for free will donation. Usually we have bags and stickers set out to purchase as well. All proceds go back to advertising and keeping the market going and growing!
There's always a Humboldt Farmer's Market committee member near the table to answer any questions and help direct everyone to the activities going on that Saturday. On a normal, good weather day the Humboldt Farmer's Market table is set up in front of the plaza statue on the 600 block of Sumner Ave.
If you haven't been able to attend the Humboldt Farmer's Market yet we're located downtown, 600 block Sumner Ave. in Humboldt. Below you'll find the dates and activities.
Our next Humboldt Farmer's Market is July 8th.
We have some activites in the works that we'll announce soon!
Until then, thank you THANK YOU thank you for all the support! We appreciate it more than you know. We'll see you in 2 short weeks.
